Kingfisher Hotel, Unawatuna

Kingfisher Hotel, Unawatuna

This is a very small boutique hotel that is right on the beach at Unawatuna. It only has 4 rooms so does have a very intimate feel to it. The rooms are chic and large and all have balconies. There is no pool but you can swim safely all year round at Unawatuna as the bay is horse-shaped and is protected with an outer reef, so there are no strong currents. The hotel has a great restaurant –as it isn’t big, you do need to book. You do need to be aware that sometimes there can be beach parties where music is played.

Heritance Ahungalla, Ahungalla

Heritance Ahungalla, Ahungalla

This hotel was formerly designed by Geoffrey Bawa, one of Sri Lanka’s leading architects and following a recent refurbishment has come well and truly up to date but without losing the elegance of his design. It is located on a fabulous stretch of golden sands in the south. All rooms have sea views with private balconies. Of particular note is the fabulous infinity pool next to the main lobby, which guides your eye to the ocean as you enter the hotel. If you are travelling with children, baby-sitting can be arranged here. It is approx. two and a half hours of travel travel time from Colombo.
