Amba Estate, Ella

Amba Estate, Ella

This home stay is on a delightful small organic estate growing both tea and spices. It isn’t as grand as many of the tea bungalows but does have a rustic charm all of its own. You can stay in the main bungalow which has 4 double rooms and 2 bathrooms. It is about 40mins from Ella and is perched above Ravana Falls with fantastic views of Ella Rock and Lipton’s Seat. You can take tours of the tea estate and micro tea factory or enjoy one of the many walks to be had in this area and the fantastic sunrises and sunsets. Would recommend a minimum of a two night stay.
Aluvihare Rock Temple

Aluvihare Rock Temple

One of the oldest and most sacred Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, the Aluvihare Rock Temple is a treasure trove of ancient relics from the 3rd century BC right up until the present day.
Founded by first Buddhist king, Devanampiyatissa, the temple remains a place of worship and is laid out over several levels of the lush and mountainous landscape. The temple and surrounding area is a wonderful and intriguing place to visit during any Sri Lankan tour.
The Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya

The Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya

The Hill Club is definitely a step back it time. The hotel has a feel of a Scottish mansion and was originally established in 1876 as a “Club” for the colonials who used to go to Nuwara Eliya to escape the heat on the coastal plains. Even today it has Members and there are rules and regulations such as gentlemen can’t dine in the Member’s formal dining room without a jacket and tie (you can borrow one from the hotel, if you haven’t packed one!) or if you prefer you can eat in the casual dining room. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed in the Club.

Yapahuwa Rock Fortress tour

Yapahuwa Rock Fortress tour

The main attraction of Yapahuwa is the steep ornamental staircase, flanked by sculptures of lions and the ancient walls with their sculptured female figurines.
During the 13th century, when Bhuvanekabahu was king, Yapahuwa was the capital of the island and home to the sacred tooth relic. The formidable rock fortress sits on a granite outcrop that raises high above the surrounding plains forming an impressive defence for its ruler.
Yapahuwa was eventually captured by the Indians in the last 13th century who took the tooth relic to South India (the relic was recaptured just four years later and brought back to Sri Lanka).
