Day 1

Transfer from airport to Negombo. Room booked from 2pm.

NEGOMBO is one of the most popular beach holiday destinations and there are a lot of restaurants and bars close to the hotel.

Day 2

Drive to Wilpattu and do a GAME DRIVE INTO WILPATTU NATIONAL PARK where you will see many deer, crocodiles, water buffaloes, birds, and if you are lucky, a leopard and sloth bear. Wilpattu is the largest National Park in Sri Lanka and there is a very high percentage chance of seeing a Leopard or a Sloth Bear there. It is not as busy as the other National Parks.

Day 3

Visit the ancient city of ANURADHAPURA (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Anuradhapura was the largest and most important of all the Sri Lankan Royal Capital cities flourishing between the 5th century BC and 10th century AD. One of the relic temples here was the 3rd tallest monument in the world at the time when it was built.

Visit MIHINTALE– this is where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka and is one of the most popular temple complexes among the locals.

Day 4

Do a GAME DRIVE INTO MINNERIYA NATIONAL PARK (it may be that due to the location of the elephants that you will do a game drive into Hurulu Oya National Park or Kaudulla National Park instead which are very close to each other- Extra 35 pounds pp)

Climb the LION ROCK AT SIGIRIYA (UNESCO World Heritage Site) which stands about 650ft high and was a capital of Sri Lanka in the 5th century and a magnificent rock fortress. There is much to see here including water gardens, mirror wall, frescoes, lion’s paws etc. and from the top there is a fabulous uninterrupted 365° view of the surrounding countryside.

Day 5

Do a BIKE RIDE through the rice paddy fields to the villages using small back roads, where you can experience the real Sri Lankan walk of life. There is an irrigation channel running parallel to our cycle route where there is very rich bird life and unusual wild life such as Monitor Lizard, Chameleon and Mongoose etc. Half way through the ride, you will have refreshments of King Coconut and later have lunch at a farmer’s house.

Day 6

Visit the magnificent DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Built in the 1st century BC, this is the largest painted cave temple in the world – there are five caves containing about 200 statues of Lord Buddha.

Drive to KANDY (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – this Royal city was the last indigenous capital of Sri Lanka. Kandy is situated about 1500ft above sea level and is said to be the most picturesque of all the Sri Lankan cities as it nestles in the hills with the lake at the bottom.

On the way, visit a SPICE GARDEN, where you can take a walk round the garden to see how they grow and learn about Ayurvedic medicine

Day 7

Do a peaceful walk in the isolated UDAWATTHAKELE NATURE RESERVE for about two hours. On the way to the town you do a guided tour of the GARRISON WAR CEMETERY
In town visit a HINDU TEMPLE & the ST. PAUL`S CHURCH. You can have lunch at a local restaurant & later in the day watch the CULTURAL SHOW.

Day 8

Visit the TEMPLE OF THE TOOTH which is the most visited temple in Sri Lanka and is the only temple in the world with a tooth relic of Buddha. You will visit the Temple during the ceremony to soak up the atmosphere.

Take a leisurely walk round the beautiful ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS– these are the best gardens in South East Asia, the highlights being the Orchid House, Palm Avenue and Green Bamboo etc.

Free time – relaxing or shopping where you can visit the local market, silk shop or gem museum etc.

Day 9

Drive through the tea plantations to KITHULGALA – this is a sleepy village set beside the Kelani River surrounded by thick evergreen forest.

Do a JUNGLE WALK among the hills through rainforest type vegetation ending up back in the local village. At the end of the walk you cross a suspension bridge which is the only way across to the main road.

Do either FLAT WATER RAFTING (GRADE 1) or WHITE WATER RAFTING (GRADE3)(optional excursion – £20pp)down the Kelani River. This is a special experience as you are surrounded by thick evergreen fohttps://theuniquetravel.co.uk/activities-to-do-in-sri-lanka/visit-sri-lankas-tea-plantations/rest.

Day 10

Drive to Nuwara Eliya (“little England”) through the tea plantations – this is the best drive of your tour where you will see thousands of acres of TEA PLANTATIONS and some breath-taking views as you slowly climb up through the hills to get to “little England” which is over 6000 feet above sea level. On the way, you are sure to spot some tea pickers and also some waterfalls.

Visit a TEA FACTORY to see just how tea is produced.

Do a city tour of NUWARA ELIYA – (this is where the colonials used to escape to when it was too hot on the coastal plains) taking in the highlights – the racecourse, Hill Club (was the centre of all colonial life), Gregory’s Lake etc. You will see some of the buildings have a distinctly British feel about them.

Day 11

Do a walk on HORTON PLAINS (UNESCO World Heritage Site) to see World’s End (where on a clear day, you can see the drop of over 3000ft and the coast some 50 miles away) and Bakers Falls. The walk is through cloud forest over 7000 feet above sea level, and has unusual flora and fauna.

Take a TRAIN RIDE from Pattipola to Bandarawela – this is the most scenic train ride in the country which drops over 3000 feet within an hour and a half. The ride is a windy, twisty interesting one in a very old fashioned train.

Day 12

Visit ELLA GAP and climb LITTLE ADAM`S PEAK – this is a chance to walk up through the tea plantations. From the top, there are amazing views down the valley to the southern plains.

Drive to Unawatuna on the South coast where you can relax on the golden sands beaches shaded by coconut palms.

Day 13

Day 14

Do optional WHALE WATCHING (extra £45pp) – only between November and April. Mirissa is the best place in Sri Lanka to do Whale Watching –with almost a guarantee that you will see a whale – the most common being Blue Whales, but there are also lots of dolphins and seasonal Sperm Whales.

Drive to Colombo.

On the way, visit a TURTLE HATCHERY where you will see some baby turtles that will be released in the sea towards early morning.

From the turtle hatchery, it’s a short drive to the DUTCH FORT AT GALLE. This was originally built in 1589 and is still active and functioning. The highlights here are The Museum, Amangalla Hotel, The Dutch Church, The Light house, Clock tower and the Cricket Ground.

Then we take the Expressway to Colombo.
