Rock Fortress at Sigiriya
The largest and most sophisticated construction project undertaken by the ancient Sri Lankans, today the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is one of the most famous sites in Sri Lanka and is a must see for any traveller.
Dating back to the 5th century and once the capital of Sri Lanka, the rock itself is 300m high and the palace at the top provides stunning views of the surrounding plains and distant mountains. Surrounding the rock there is much to see, including the famous water gardens, the frescoes located half way up and the historic lion paws.

Dambulla Cave Temple
The five caves hold roughly 200 Buddha statues and are believed to date back to the first century. The site is a must-see, being the largest painted cave temple anywhere in the world.

Anuradhapura

Wilpattu National Park
Situated in the north east of Sri Lanka, the Wilpattu National Park is the largest and one the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka and is globally renowned as one of the top national parks for leopards.
The park is idyllic with its dense jungle that opens onto wide lakes which countless majestic animals call home. As well as its renowned leopards, the park also contains a healthy array of other animals, such as water buffalo, crocodiles and sloth bears.

Minneriya National Park
The Minneriya National Park is a great place to sight elephants as they typically crowd toward the lake, especially in large number between June and September when the water begins to dry up.
There are plenty of other wildlife to see in the park too, included deer, beautiful birds and water buffalo. The park is thought to include 24species of mammals, 160 species of bird, 25 species of reptiles and 75 species of butterfly.
