Drive to Dambulla (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and visit the fascinating DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE – this is the largest painted cave temple in the world and dates from the 1st century BC. There are 5 caves containing about 200 statues of Lord Buddha.

Jeep tour of Polonnaruwa. You take the back roads to see the real Sri Lankan life & feel the pulse of the people. You stop at shops & fields to get familiar with village life.
Do the HIRIWADUNNA TREK (this is a bullock cart ride through the villages, then crossing a lake on an “oruwa”(canoe with outrigger) to a banana plantation and then have lunch in a traditional mudhouse in the local village.

Overnight at Vil Uyana, Sigiriya
Visit POLONNARUWA (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – this was the second capital city of Sri Lanka and dates from 10th – 12th century AD- it contains some of Sri Lanka’s most famous monuments including the Gal Vihara and the Rankot Dagoba.
Do a GAME DRIVE INTO MINNERIYA NATIONAL PARK to see the “Gathering” of elephants (can be up to 300) that takes place between June and September but there are still large numbers to be seen at other times of the year. There are many birds to be seen as well as other animals.
Overnight at Vil Uyana, Sigiriya
Visit the iconic ROCK FORTRESS AT SIGIRIYA (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – this was once the capital of Sri Lanka and dates from 5th century AD. The rock is 650ft high and from the top there are breath-taking views of the surrounding plains and the mountains in the distance. There is much to see here including water gardens, frescoes, lions paws and of course the palace on the top.
Drive to Kandy. On the way, visit a SPICE GARDEN to see how Sri Lankan herbs and spices are used.
KANDY was the last Royal capital city of Sri Lanka and is said to be its most picturesque city as it nestles in the hills with the lake at the bottom.

Do a peaceful walk in the isolated UDAWATTHAKELE NATURE RESERVE for about
two hours.
On the way to the town you do a guided tour of the GARRISON WAR CEMETERY
In town visit a HINDU TEMPLE and the ST. PAUL`S CHURCH.
You can have lunch at
a local restaurant if you wish.
Visit the TEMPLE OF THE TOOTH (UNESCO World Heritage Site) by the lake – this is said to house “Lord Buddha’s Tooth”- you would visit at the time of the Puja (ceremony of offerings).
Drive to Nuwara-Eliya up through the mountains covered in thousands of acres of TEA PLANTATIONSpassing Ramboda Falls.
Visit a TEA FACTORY to see how tea is produced.
Have time to explore the old colonial town of NUWARA ELIYA also known as “little England”. This is the heart of the tea growing area and at about 6500ft, is much cooler.

Drive to Yala.
Do a late afternoon GAME DRIVE INTO YALA NATIONAL PARK where it is likely you would see elephants, spotted deer, water buffalo and many birds and if you are particularly lucky, a leopard (you have the best chance here of anywhere in the world of seeing a leopard) or even more lucky a sloth bear
