This is a beautiful old stone built colonial bungalow set way off the beaten track deep in the heart of the fantastic Knuckles Mountains. It’s a 2hr drive from Kandy –and there is very little other accommodation to be had in the area. It is far more basic but it’s the scenery that is the star here – take in the astonishingly beautiful scenery from the verandah and do several of the walks to explore this area where very few tourists go.
Forest Edge offers a comfortable eco-friendly retreat on the banks of the famous Kelani River with wonderful panoramic views across the neighbouring tea plantations.
A great hub for exploring the island, Forest Edge has a twenty four hour reception and WiFi connectivity in the public areas of the hotel.
While Kitulgala generally experiences a mild climate each room also has air conditioning and additional fans to ensure your stay is comfortable.
A World Heritage site and treasure trove of historic relics, the ancient City of Polonnaruwa is among the best planned archaeological sites in Sri Lanka and is not to be missed during your Sri Lankan tour.
Polonnaruwa was declared the first city by King Vijayabahu in the 11th century, replacing Anuradhapurawhich had been left abandoned to the invading armies from India. The city reached its golden age during the reign of King Parakramabahu during the 12th century and much of the grandeur and awe-inspiring monuments erected during this time are still present to this day.
Ellerton is a delightful small boutique hotel that was originally a tea planter’s bungalow 100 years ago. It is located some 45mins from Kandy at being 2,400ft up, the climate is superb – there are also stunning views of the mountains around about! The accommodation is in 3 areas – Main House, the Valley House, which looks onto the fantastic infinity pool and the self-contained Garden Rooms. The hotel is styled so that it feels as though you are staying in someone’s home rather than a hotel so feels very comfortable.
This beautiful colonial house was once the home of a Ceylonese nobleman. In 2013, this was converted into a six bedroomed luxury boutique hotel which uses colonial furniture to good effect, in a modern surrounding. Elephant Stables welcomes families with children and there are two Suites – Vanilla and Cottage that can accommodate two adults and two children. The gardens are particularly lush and there are fantastic views of the Knuckles Mountains in the distance yet the hotel is only 15 minutes from the centre of Kandy
